Origin
Actinidia deliciosa originates from southern China, where it is found naturally in temperate climates. From China, the plant spread to other parts of the world, including New Zealand and Europe. In the twentieth century, it became popular as a commercial fruit crop.
Characteristics
Actinidia deliciosa is a climbing plant that can reach up to nine metres in length. It has large, heart-shaped leaves with a downy texture. The flowers are white to creamy yellow and usually appear in late spring. The fruit is oval, brown and hairy, with bright green flesh and small black seeds. The plant is dioecious, which means there are both male and female specimens.
Care
Actinidia deliciosa grows best in a sunny, sheltered position. It prefers well-draining, fertile soil. Regular watering will encourage healthy growth. Good fruit production requires pollination, which generally means planting both male and female specimens. The plant tolerates light frost, but young plants are more sensitive to low temperatures.
