Phormium tenax 'Brown Sugar', also known as New Zealand Flax, has its origin in New Zealand. The Maori traditionally used this plant for various purposes, ranging from woven baskets to clothing. The 'Brown Sugar' variant is a cultivated form of the native species.

Characteristics
Phormium tenax 'Brown Sugar' is characterised by its long, sword-shaped leaves, which are coppery-brown to dark red in colour. This evergreen perennial plant can reach a height of about two meters. It blooms with long, striking flower stems from which red or yellow flowers emerge between November and June.

Care
The care of Phormium tenax 'Brown Sugar' requires a sunny to semi-shady location with well-drained soil. Although the plant is drought-resistant, regular watering ensures optimal growth conditions. Older leaves showing signs of aging should ideally be removed in the spring to keep the plant healthy and to stimulate new growth.
