Origin
Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' is a cultivar of the Eastern redbud. This plant has its origin in the United States. The ‘Merlot’ selection was developed by crossing Cercis canadensis ‘Forest Pansy’. The aim of this cross was to combine a compact growth habit with deep leaf colours.

Characteristics
Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' is a small to medium-sized ornamental tree with a narrow, upright growth habit. The leaves are glossy and deep violet in colour, emerging deep red and remaining strikingly dark throughout the season. In spring, pink to light purple flowers appear directly on the old wood. The tree can reach a height of around 3 to 4 metres. This plant is deciduous.

Care
Cercis canadensis 'Merlot' thrives best in a sunny to partially shaded position. The soil should be well-drained and preferably slightly acidic to neutral. The tree tolerates moderate drought, but prefers a somewhat moist soil. Pruning is rarely necessary and is best carried out immediately after flowering.
