Origin
Cercis canadensis is a plant species native to eastern North America. The species belongs to the legume family (Fabaceae). In its natural habitat, the tree is most often found in open woodlands, forest edges, and along riverbanks. Cercis canadensis is used as an ornamental plant in various parts of the world.

Characteristics
This deciduous tree or large shrub typically reaches a height of 6 to 9 metres. In spring, striking pink to magenta flowers appear directly on the branches and trunk. The leaves are broadly heart-shaped and often turn yellow in autumn. After flowering, flat, pod-like fruits follow. The bark is smooth and grey on young specimens, becoming darker and rougher with age.

Care
Cercis canadensis grows best in a sunny to lightly shaded position. The plant prefers a well-draining, humus-rich soil. Regular watering during dry periods encourages healthy growth. If pruning is required, it should be carried out after flowering. Winter hardiness is generally good under temperate climate conditions.
