Origin
Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Spades' is a cultivar of the American redbud, originally native to North America. In the wild, the species mainly grows in regions with a temperate climate. This particular variety has been developed through selection within nurseries. The plant is primarily used in gardens and landscaping for its distinctive foliage colour.
Characteristics
Cercis canadensis 'Ace of Spades' is a small to medium-sized ornamental tree with a compact growth habit. The leaves are striking, with a deep purple to almost black colour and a heart-shaped appearance. Young shoots are bronze-coloured, maturing to a darker shade. In spring, small, purplish-pink flowers appear directly on the bare wood. The tree typically reaches a height of 3 to 4 metres.
Care
This variety grows best in a sunny to partially shaded location. It tolerates a well-drained, moist soil. The tree is tolerant of air pollution and moderate drought. Pruning is not strictly necessary, but may be carried out directly after flowering. Winter hardiness is generally sufficient for the UK climate.
