DescriptionSpecifications

Origin
The Alocasia macrorrhiza, also known as the Giant Taro, originates from the tropical rainforests of Southeast Asia. Over the centuries, the plant spread to other humid, tropical areas around the world, including the Pacific Islands, Africa and the Caribbean.

Characteristics
The Alocasia macrorrhiza is characterised by its gigantic leaves that can be up to a metre long, shaped like an elephant's ear, hence the nickname. The plant has an upright growth habit and can reach a height of four metres under optimal, outdoor conditions. The leaves have a deeply wrought surface, and the plant sporadically produces inconspicuous flowers followed by inconspicuous fruit.

Care
The Alocasia macrorrhiza prefers a location with indirect sunlight and high humidity, similar to its original, tropical habitat. It requires well-draining soil to prevent root rot and needs regular, moderate watering during the growing period. Although the plant can tolerate a variety of temperatures, it thrives best in temperatures between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius. Like its tropical counterparts, the Alocasia macrorrhiza is not frost-resistant.
