Origin
The Anthurium andraeanum 'Joli', better known as the Flamingo Flower, originates from the tropical rainforests of South and Central America. Here, they grow as epiphytes, making use of other plants to reach higher. The plant was given its scientific name in honour of the French botanist Edouard Francis André, known for his research into bromeliads and aroids.
Characteristics
Anthurium andraeanum 'Joli' is characterised by its large, glossy, heart-shaped leaves which come in red, pink, or white. The plant is especially loved for its long-lasting bloom, which can last for most of the year. The flowers consist of a coloured bract with a spadix in the middle, where the real small flowers are located on this spadix. Unique to this variety is its compactness and less high growth ability, making it an ideal houseplant.
Care
The Anthurium andraeanum 'Joli' prefers a warm and bright environment, but doesn't cope well with direct sunlight. The optimal temperature is between 20 and 22 degrees Celsius. It's important to moisten the soil regularly, without letting the plant's roots stand in the water. High humidity is desirable for this plant, which in practice can be achieved by regularly spraying the plant with water. It is advisable to fertilise the plant monthly with a general liquid plant fertiliser during the growing season.
