Origin
The Dicksonia antarctica, better known as the Australian tree fern, is a fern species native to Eastern Australia and Tasmania. The plant primarily grows on damp, sheltered forest floors and ravines. It naturally occurs in cool, temperate rainforests.

Characteristics
The Dicksonia antarctica is characterised by its thick, fibrous trunk top, which is surrounded by a rosette of fresh green, fern-like leaves. The trunk can grow up to 15 metres high under ideal conditions. In its early years, the plant grows very slowly. A distinctive feature of the Dicksonia antarctica is its ability to form new growth points after damage.

Care
The care of the Dicksonia antarctica requires ample water and avoidance of drought. The plant needs water at least once a week in summer, and the soil should remain damp in winter. Placement choice is also essential; it prefers a light to semi-shaded spot and requires a protected location during winter time. Its sensitivity to frost means that in colder climates, the Dicksonia antarctica should be overwintered indoors or in a heated greenhouse.
