Origin
The Dicksonia antarctica, also known as the Australian tree fern, has its origin down under, in the rainforests of Australia, Tasmania and New Zealand. In this moist and forested environment, the fern grows optimally. The botanical name comes from James Dickson, a Scottish botanist.

Characteristics
The Dicksonia antarctica is one of the most hardy tree ferns, making it a beloved plant for the temperate climate zone. The characteristic trunk, consisting of old leaf base remains, grows in a disorderly manner upward and can reach up to approximately 4 meters high. The large, dark green leaves form a lush crown of 2 to 6 meters wide. The manner in which new leaves develop is interesting; from the middle of the plant they unfold in a spiral form outwards.

Care
The Australian tree fern sets specific demands for its living environment; a moist, water-permeable soil and a location in the semi-shade is optimal. Watering should be frequent, with particular emphasis on keeping the inside of the crown moist. In the winter, it is recommended to protect the trunk of the plant with straw or fleece cloth against frost. Lastly, fertilisation with slow-releasing granules, applied in spring, benefits the Dicksonia antarctica.
