Origin
The Dioscorea elephantipes, also known as the elephant's foot yam, originates from the dry south of Africa. This plant belongs to the Dioscoreaceae family and is endemic to the regions of the Cape Provinces and parts of northern KwaZulu-Natal.

Characteristics
A key characteristic of the Dioscorea elephantipes is the large, above-ground tuber resembling the shape of an elephant's foot, hence the name. This tuber can grow up to a meter high and is covered with hard, horn-like segments that protect the plant from animals and repeated drought. The plant has thread-like tendrils bearing heart-shaped leaves and small, greenish flowers.

Care
The elephant's foot yam is a winter-growing plant, hence it requires care during this period while watering should be reduced during summer, its rest period. The plant thrives best in well-draining soil and at a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius. It's crucial to plant the Dioscorea elephantipes in a planter with a diameter at least twice as large as the tuber to accommodate the plant during its growth period. Additionally, in order to remain healthy, the plant needs a location with plenty of light but without direct sunlight.
