Origin
The Dioon edule, also better known as the Virgin Palm, is a plant species hailing from Eastern Mexico. This plant primarily grows in wooded areas, where it is abundantly warm and humid. The growing conditions in Mexico provide the perfect balance of sunshine and humidity, which is essential for the survival of the Dioon edule.
Characteristics
The Dioon edule is part of the Cycadaceae family and is an evergreen plant. They feature a thick trunk that widens upwards, with deep grooves running its length. The leaves range from blue-grey to bright green, they are stiff and glossy, slightly cone-shaped. What sets them apart are the imposing leaves that can grow up to a length of 1 metre. This contributes to the exotic appearance of the plant.
Care
Although the Dioon edule is a tropical plant, it can withstand a wide range of temperatures, although it prefers the temperature to not fall below 10 degrees Celsius. They require a sunny location and well-draining soil, irrigated with even, moderate amounts of water. Too much water can cause root rot. It is recommended to fertilise the plant during the growing season to promote its growth.
