Origin
The Dryopteris erythrosora, also known as the Autumn Fern, is a fern species native to East Asia. It grows in various natural habitats, including forested regions and mountains. This plant is closely related to the largest fern family in the world, the Dryopteridaceae, which also includes a large number of species in the Western world.

Characteristics
The Dryopteris erythrosora is characterised by its broad leaves which have a striking red colour in spring, hence the name 'Autumn Fern'. As they mature, they change colour to green. The leaves are feathery and grow from a short, upright trunk which gives them a distinctive appearance. The plant can reach a height of up to 1 meter, but usually stays smaller at about 60 centimetres.

Care
The Dryopteris erythrosora is a fairly easy plant to care for. Because the fern is native to shady regions, it prefers a location in partial shade or full shade. It also needs plenty of water, but it is essential to ensure that the plant does not soak in water. Do not compact the soil as the plant likes well-drained soil. This fern is a perennial that does not lose its leaves in winter and is therefore winter hardy.
