Origin
The Euphorbia ingens, also known as the South African candlestick, is a plant species native to South Africa. The plant is found in the wild in dry areas and is resilient against the heat and drought of the African climate. This plant is named after Euphorbus, the Greek doctor to King Juba II of Mauretania.
Characteristics
Euphorbia ingens is a succulent that belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family. It can grow into a large tree, reaching about 12 metres high. The tree has a grey-green bark and the leaves are small, round and usually fall quickly from the trunk. The plant has an interesting growth pattern where the trunk branches out in the shape of a candelabra, hence its nickname.
Care
Euphorbia ingens has minimal demands on its environment, provided it gets enough sunlight and not too much water. It's an ideal houseplant for those who don't have much time for plant care, as it requires little maintenance. The plant prefers a sunny and warm location, and does not survive at temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Overwatering should be avoided as, like all succulents, too much water can cause the plant's roots to rot.
