Origin
The Ferocactus horridus brevispinus, also known as the short prickly Barrel cactus, has its origin in the desert areas of North America. This cactus is native primarily to Mexico and the southwestern United States. The desert climate, with high temperatures and low rainfall, is ideal for the growth of this type of species.

Characteristics
The Ferocactus horridus brevispinus is a spherical or short cylindrical plant that can reach heights of 30 to 60 centimetres. The plant is characterised by its deep green colour and hard, heavy spines that run in vertical rows across the cactus. In mature specimens, the spines can grow up to 7 centimetres long. In the summer, the cactus blooms with red or yellow flowers that emerge from the top of the plant.

Care
The care of the Ferocactus horridus brevispinus requires a location with full sunlight and highly draining soil. Watering needs to be moderate, the soil must completely dry out between two watering sessions. In the winter, when the plant is resting, hardly any water is necessary. It is best to keep the cactus indoors during the winter months, as it is not very resistant to very low temperatures.
