Origin
The Ferocactus stainesii, also known as the Mexican barrel cactus, originates in Mexico. It is native to the states of Hidalgo and Querétaro. This cactus is particularly prevalent in high-altitude, dry, and rocky areas.
Characteristics
The Ferocactus stainesii is a colossal round to slightly cylindrical cactus that can reach a height of 1 to 2 metres. The stems are initially spherical, but become columnar over the years. The vibrant green skin of this cactus is covered with thick, curved spines that can be red, yellow or grey. The yellow flowers are located at the top of the plant and usually appear in late summer.
Care
Cultivating the Ferocactus stainesii requires well-drained soil and lots of sunlight. It is a drought-tolerant plant and can survive in extreme sun and heat stress. The plant requires a rest period in the winter, during which it needs little to no water. It's important not to overwater this cactus as this can lead to root rot or even the death of the plant.
