Ficus benghalensis 'Audrey'
Stem
4FIBARS45
Origin
The Ficus lyrata, also known as the Fiddle Leaf Fig, has its roots in the tropical part of West Africa. It can be found in countries such as Sierra Leone, Cameroon, and Ivory Coast. It naturally grows in the lowlands of the rainforests, where it adapts to varying and complex environments.
Characteristics
The large, shiny leaves that resemble a violin, which gives the Ficus lyrata its nickname, are a striking characteristic. The leaves can reach a length of up to thirty centimetres and often have a deep, rich green colour. The plant itself can also grow quite large, up to about three metres indoors and many times larger outdoors. The Ficus lyrata is part of the mulberry family and produces miniature figs as fruit.
Care
In terms of care, the Ficus lyrata needs lots of light but should not be placed in direct sunlight as its leaves may burn. The plant requires moderate watering and should be allowed to partially dry out between watering. Overwatering can cause root rot, a common problem with this species. The Ficus lyrata thrives best at room temperature and prefers a high humidity level, which is common in its natural habitat, the rainforest.
