Origin
The Ficus microcarpa 'Nitida', also known as the Chinese banyan, originates from Southeast Asia and Northern Australia. This elegant plant naturally grows in a subtropical climate, mainly in lower forest areas and along riverbeds. This Ficus can still be found growing wild in parts of Australia, China and Malaysia today.
Characteristics
The Ficus microcarpa 'Nitida' is incredibly versatile in its growth method, which explains why it's so popular in landscaping and as a houseplant. It can develop into a grand tree, but can also be pruned into a more compact shrub or hedge. The plant is recognisable by its dense, shiny leaf canopy with dark green, oval leaves that exude a lively, fresh atmosphere. Furthermore, this Ficus produces small, inconspicuous fruits.
Care
The care of the Ficus microcarpa 'Nitida' requires some attention. The optimal conditions for the plant are a sunny to semi-shady location, an air humidity between 60 and 70 percent, and a fluctuating environment temperature that never drops below 0 degrees Celsius. Hence, the plant is not hardy. Watering should be moderate, aiming for a slightly moist soil, without allowing the roots to stand in water. An annual fertiliser application in the spring is recommended to support the plant's growth potential.
