The Ficus microcarpa 'Nitida', also known as the Chinese Banyan, has its roots in the natural forests of Southeast Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands region. This plant belongs to the family Moraceae, or the mulberry family. Over the centuries, the Ficus has been introduced in many different regions and climates worldwide because of its attractive appearance and adaptability.
Characteristics
The Ficus microcarpa 'Nitida' is an evergreen tree with a wide-spreading crown and air roots that can form branches when they come into contact with the earth. This species is capable of reaching considerable heights, sometimes up to 20 meters. The leaves have a glossy, leather-like texture with a rich green colour. It produces small, unnoticeable flowers and round, red fruits that are very small, hence the name 'microcarpa', which means 'small fruit'.
