Origin
The Kalanchoe beharensis, also known as the Elephant's Ear, originally originates from the southwest of Madagascar. This plant is part of the Crassulaceae family, more commonly known as the succulent family. Its natural habitat includes dry, rocky areas and semi-deserts.
Characteristics
The large, hairy leaves that resemble elephant ears are characteristic of the Kalanchoe beharensis, hence the nickname. The leaves are velvety and have a golden brown to grey colour. Moreover, the plant grows upright, with stems that are thick and fleshy. Given the right conditions, the plant can produce flowers, which are a striking yellow colour.
Care
In terms of care, the Kalanchoe beharensis has few requirements. It is most crucial that the plant is placed in well-draining soil to prevent root rot. This succulent also thrives in ample light, but direct sunlight can burn the leaf. Although the plant can withstand some drought, a regular watering system is advised, where the soil must dry out well between watering. Lastly, the Kalanchoe beharensis does not tolerate frost and is therefore not suitable for outdoor planting in a cold climate.
