Origin
The Pachycereus pringlei, also known as the Cardon, is a native species from Mexico. It is mainly found in the Mexican states of Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sonora. This species grows in dry, rocky areas and tolerates extreme weather conditions.
Characteristics
The Pachycereus pringlei is the largest cactus in the world. It can grow to a height of up to 19 metres and weigh up to 25 tonnes. This plant has multiple thick, columnar branches that grow from the base. The grey-green stems have on average 12 sharp ribs and the stems are covered with large, hard spikes.
Care
Successfully growing a Pachycereus pringlei requires a lot of sunlight and well-draining soil. The plant has a slow growth process and requires little water, especially in winter. It is also resistant to frost up to -4 degrees Celsius. As this cactus can become ill from overwatering, it is important to be careful when watering.
