Origin
The Pandanus utilis, commonly known as Screwpine, is native to Madagascar. It is an exotic species that has been introduced in various tropical climates around the world. Nowadays, the plant can be seen in many botanical gardens and as a landscape plant in warmer regions.

Characteristics
The Pandanus utilis is a large, robust plant that can reach heights of 20 meters. It is characterised by its long, narrow, thorny leaves and massive, trunk-like base. The plant naturally forms aerial roots to help it remain upright in its natural, windy habitat. The plant produces large, cone-shaped fruits, although these are not edible to humans.

Care
The strength of the Pandanus utilis lies in its high tolerance for various conditions. The plant thrives in full sun or partial shade and requires well-draining soil. This plant is resistant to salt and drought, making it ideal for coastal landscapes. Fertilising can take place once to twice a year with a balanced, time-release fertiliser. The Pandanus utilis requires little water and generally does well with watering once a week, although this frequency can increase during dry periods.
