Origin
The Pilea peperomioides, also known as the Pancake Plant, has its origin in Southwest China. In this region, the plant grows on the shadowy ground of the mountainous areas. It was discovered by a Norwegian missionary at the beginning of the 20th century, thereby giving the plant access to the Western world.
Characteristics
The Pilea peperomioides is a house plant characterized by its round, flat, dark green leaves reminiscent of pancakes, hence the nickname Pancake Plant. This plant has a compact growth form and has an average height of 30 cm. The leaves grow on long stems that shoot up from the centre of the plant.
Care
The Pilea peperomioides needs a light position, but it cannot tolerate direct sunlight. The plant requires moderate watering, usually once a week is sufficient. It is important to ensure that the plant is not constantly standing with its roots in water. During the growth period, spring and summer, the plant appreciates a dose of feed once a month. In winter, this plant goes into rest and does not require feeding.
