Origin
The Strelitzia nicolai, also known as the White Bird of Paradise, is originally from South Africa. The plant belongs to the Strelitziaceae family. It grows in the wild in coastal areas and along river banks where the climate is mild and the soil is well-drained.

Characteristics
Distinctive for the Strelitzia nicolai are the long, graceful leaves that grow in a fan shape from the base of the plant. The leaves are dark green in colour and can grow up to 2 metres long. The plant blooms in the spring and summer with white or blue flowers that strongly resemble the head of a crane. The Strelitzia nicolai is often kept as an indoor or patio plant, but can also be planted in the garden in milder climates.

Care
The Strelitzia nicolai needs regular watering, especially in the summer. Ensure that the soil is well-drained and prevent water saturation, as this can cause root rot. The plant grows best in indirect sunlight and thrives well in a humid climate. The Strelitzia nicolai requires little feeding, but can benefit from a general fertiliser during the growth period. Regular pruning can help to keep the plant healthy and compact. Both actions, watering and pruning, should be done in moderation.
