Origin
The Strelitzia Nicolai, also known as the White Bird of Paradise, finds its origin in South Africa. The plant specifically occurs in the eastern regions of the south coast. It was in these regions that the plant was first discovered by European colonists at the end of the 18th century. Since then, the plant has been cultivated and appreciated worldwide for its beautiful flowers and leaves.
Characteristics
The Strelitzia Nicolai is a large, evergreen plant. It is characterised by its long, stalked leaves that resemble a feather headdress. The leaves can grow up to 2 metres in length in mature plants. The plant produces striking white and blue flowers that resemble a bird of paradise, hence the nickname. These flowers generally appear from late spring until early autumn.
Care
The care of the Strelitzia Nicolai requires high light intensity; it performs best in direct sunlight. In terms of watering, the plant has a moderate need. It prefers a well-draining soil and is quite tolerant of periods of drought. Although the plant can withstand lower temperatures, it performs best at temperatures between 20 and 30 degrees Celsius. Depending on the conditions, fertilisation during the growing season can be beneficial.
