Origin
The Stenocarpus sinuatus, also known as the firewheel tree, is a tree that originally hails from Australia. It can be found along the eastern coastline of the country, from Mackay in the north to the Blue Mountains in the south.
Characteristics
The Stenocarpus sinuatus is an evergreen tree that can reach heights of 15 to 30 metres in its natural environment. The tree is particularly known for its striking flowers, which are elongated and grow in a wheel-like structure. They are usually red or orange, although there are also varieties with yellow or white flowers. The blooming period is between June and November. The leaves of the Stenocarpus sinuatus are shiny, dark green and wavy serrated.
Care
Stenocarpus sinuatus prefers well-drained, acidic to neutral soils. In culture, the tree can be grown in full sun or semi-shade, but yields the best results at a location with full sun. The tree is drought-tolerant, but will bloom better if it gets regular water, especially during hot, dry periods. It is also advisable to regularly prune the plant to control shape and size.
