Origin
The Stenocarpus sinuatus, also known as the Firewheel Tree, is an evergreen tree native to the rainforests of Australia. It is typical for this species to grow wild in the coastal areas of Queensland and New South Wales. These trees are not only appreciated in Australia, but due to their impressive beauty, they have also been introduced in other parts of the world, including Hawaii, California and South America.

Characteristics
The Stenocarpus sinuatus is identifiable by its large, shiny, deep-green leaves that often have a wavy border. One of its most striking features, however, is its bloom, which takes the shape of a spectacular flower wheel. These flower clusters contain numerous bright red, tubular flowers that resemble the spokes of a wheel, hence the nickname. The fruits of this tree are large, woody capsules that open to reveal numerous winged seeds.

Care
As for care, the Stenocarpus sinuatus requires well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. It prefers sunny to semi-shaded locations, and a well-draining soil is essential in order to prevent root rot. Even though it is a tropical plant, the tree is capable of surviving light frost. Regular watering is necessary during the growing season, but the frequency should be reduced during the colder months. An annual top-up of compost and/or fertiliser helps the plant maintain its lush growth and spectacular bloom.
