Stem
4VEMERS46
Origin
The Veitchia merrillii, also known as the Adonidia merrillii, has its origin in the Philippines. It is a tropical palm tree, which often occurs in its natural environment in coastal areas and on lowland forests. It is grown in lush gardens around the world and has established itself in the subtropical zones of the United States, such as Florida and California.
Characteristics
The Veitchia merrillii is a graceful, slender palm tree that can grow up to 25 metres high. This tree has a greyish, smooth trunk with rings and is crowned by a compact and skyward-pointing crown consisting of pinnate leaves. Moreover, this palm produces light yellow flower bunches that develop into graceful clusters of bright red to orange fruits. The fruits each contain a single seed and mature in the winter months.
Care
The Veitchia merrillii prefers a sunny, well-drained location and a subtropical to tropical climate. This palm doesn't like temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius and is not frost resistant. It requires regular watering, but too much water can lead to root rot. Fertilising is advised during the growing season to promote healthy growth. Regularly check for pests, as this palm can be susceptible to scale insects, mites and palm weevils.
