Origin
The Acer japonicum 'Aconitifolium' is originally from Japan and is a variety of the Acer japonicum, better known as the Japanese Maple. This unique species has been praised for centuries for its graceful appearance and elegant growth habit. Locally, the 'Aconitifolium' is also known by different nicknames.
Characteristics
The Acer jap. 'Aconitifolium' is a slow-growing, deciduous shrub that grows up to 5 metres high. Distinctive are the palmate leaves with deep cuts that provide a spectacular colour display in the autumn, ranging from yellow to deep red. The flowers are small, reddish and hang in clusters. After flowering, small winged seeds develop that stand in pairs.
Care
The 'Aconitifolium' requires a location in partial shade or full sun. The soil should contain sufficient humus, be well-drained and slightly acidic to neutral in terms of pH. It's important to protect the plant from intense midday sun and strong winds to prevent sunburn and dehydration. Even though the Acer jap. 'Aconitifolium' is winter-hardy, winter protection in the form of mulch is recommended. The plant does not need to be pruned unless shaping is necessary. When pruning, care should be taken to do this in late summer or early autumn to prevent bleeding.
