Origin
The Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum', also known as the red Japanese maple, has its origin in East Asia. It is predominantly found in China, South Korea and Japan. Over the centuries, the tree has beautified numerous gardens and landscapes in the Western world, thanks to human trade and travel.

Characteristics
The Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' is a medium-sized, deciduous tree characterised by its attractive, deep red leaves that turn bright red in autumn. The plant has a maximum height of approximately 6 meters and can grow in both sun and shade. What sets this type of maple apart is that they are well tolerable of low temperatures, making the plant a good choice for cooler environments.

Care
The Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' requires a nutritious, moist but well-drained soil, preferably with a neutral to acidic pH. Although the tree is tolerant of low temperatures, it should be noted that it can suffer from late frost in spring. Pruning is usually not necessary, but if it is done, it should be carried out in late summer or early autumn to prevent the plant from bleeding. Finally, adequate water supply should be taken care of, especially during prolonged dry periods.
