Origin
The Acer palmatum 'Butterfly', often simply called 'Butterfly', is a Japanese maple that traces its true origin to East Asia. The plant has been broadly spread across the world for its aesthetic appeal and is found particularly in Japan, Korea and China. Additionally, this plant species is often planted in North America and Europe.
Characteristics
The 'Butterfly' is a small to medium-sized maple that is famous for its striking leaves. The leaves are broadly lobed, silvery white with a green edge and turn red and orange in the autumn. This species grows to around 3 meters high and wide, depending on the conditions and age. The ‘Butterfly’ is not evergreen and thus loses its leaves during the winter months.
Care
The 'Butterfly' is a relatively low-maintenance plant. It prefers a spot in partial shade or full sun and prefers well-draining, humus-rich soil. In addition, the plant needs plenty of space to grow to its eventual width and height. When watering, the soil should be kept well moist, but not waterlogged. Watering is recommended during warm and dry periods. An annual pruning, preferably in late winter or early spring, contributes to healthy growth.
