Origin
The Acer palmatum 'Kogane Nishiki' has its roots in East Asia, particularly in Japan, China and Korea. It is a graceful plant, whose beauty and diversity in leaf forms, colours and sizes have made it popular within Japanese garden culture for centuries. Originally, the plant grows in mountainous areas and forests.
Characteristics
The Acer palmatum 'Kogane Nishiki' is a variant of the Japanese maple and is characterised by its golden to lemon yellow leaves in the spring, which change to orange-red in the autumn. The plant can reach a height of 4 to 6 meters and is deciduous. This ornamental shrub also has an upward growth habit with an open crown structure.
Care
The Acer palmatum 'Kogane Nishiki' requires well-draining and humus-rich soil and a semi-shady or shady location. It is reasonably hardy in winter, but protection in severe frost is recommended to avoid frost damage. Annual pruning in the late summer or early autumn ensures that the plant maintains its shape and encourages healthy growth. During the growing season, give the plant plenty of water and feed it with organic fertilisers in the spring.
