Origin
The Acer pal. 'Garnet' is a variant of the Japanese Maple that is native to East Asia. This species was specifically developed in Japan in the 19th century and carries the official, botanical name Acer palmatum 'Dissectum Garnet'. This cultivar has been popular in both East Asia and Europe and North America for decades.
Characteristics
The Acer pal. 'Garnet' distinguishes itself with its striking, deeply cut leaf that turns red to orange in the autumn. The plant grows in a wide, low shape and can achieve a height of 1 to 1.5 meters and a width of about two meters. 'Garnet' is known for its fine, delicate and almost translucent leaves that take on a mournful, graceful shape. The bark of the trunk and branches is conspicuously reddish brown in colour.
Care
An Acer pal. 'Garnet' requires a somewhat shady location to maintain its colour and to prevent the leaves from drying out. It prefers well-drained, humus-rich soil and it's wise to mulch the soil around the plant to prevent it drying out. Limited pruning is possible in the spring to maintain or improve the shape. It's important to know that this plant is reasonably hardy, but might need some protection from severe frost.
