Origin
The Acca sellowiana, also known as the 'Pineapple Guava', originates from the cool, mountainous region of South Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. It is an exotic plant from the Myrtaceae (myrtle) family that has spread to other parts of the world such as New Zealand and the United States over time.
Characteristics
The Acca sellowiana is an attractive, evergreen shrub that can grow into a small tree of about 3 to 4.5 meters high. The leaves are oval, leathery, and dark green on top, while they are greyish underneath. The plant produces striking, fragrant blossoms that are white with deep red stamens. After flowering, the plant develops edible fruits, called feijoas, which have a sweet, aromatic scent.
Care
The Acca sellowiana needs full sun and well-draining soil for optimal growth and fruit production. Although the plant is somewhat drought-tolerant, it needs to be watered regularly, especially during the warm, dry summer months. Annual pruning of the plant promotes a well-branched, compact growth habit. It is recommended to feed the plant with a general fertiliser during the growing season to stimulate growth and fruit production.
