Origin
The Acer jap. 'Vitifolium', also known as the Japanese maple, originally comes from East Asia, with Japan being the main area of origin. Over the centuries, this species has spread worldwide, largely due to its popular aesthetic quality and versatile adaptability.
Characteristics
The Acer jap. 'Vitifolium' is a deciduous tree that is characterised by its beautiful leaves, which are green in the spring and summer, and change to intense red in the autumn. The tree can grow up to 6 metres high and grows into a wide, screen-shaped crown. This species is particularly known for its grape-leaf-like form, hence the name 'Vitifolium', which means 'grape leaf'.
Care
In terms of care, Acer jap. 'Vitifolium' requires well-prepared, well-drained, moist and fertile soil. It cannot tolerate lime-rich soil and prefers a semi-shade spot, but it can also be in full sun if enough moisture is available. Watering should take place regularly during dry periods. Pruning is not necessary for this species, but if it is needed, it should take place during late winter to avoid infections.
