Origin
The Agave stricta, also known as the Hedgehog agave, originally comes from East and Central Mexico. This plant naturally grows in dry, rocky areas on niches and slopes at altitudes between 1300 and 2500 meters.
Characteristics
The Agave stricta is a succulent that can reach a height of 30 to 90 cm and a diameter of about 60 cm. Typical for this plant are the narrow, stiff, pointed leaves that grow in a tight rosette. In mature plants, a flower stem can grow from the rosette that can reach a height of 4 meters with red or purple flowers that attract bees and hummingbirds.
Care
For the care of the Agave stricta, sufficient sunlight is needed, as well as well-draining soil to prevent root rot. In colder climates, the plant needs to be protected against frost. Watering should be done in moderation, especially during the rest period in the winter, and only when the soil is completely dry. Too much water can lead to root rot.
