Origin
The Adonsonia, better known as the Baobab, is a genus of trees originating from parts of Africa, Australia, and the Arabian peninsula. They belong to the Malvaceae family and are clearly recognisable by their thick trunks, which enable them to store water during dry seasons.
Characteristics
Baobab trees can reach heights of up to 30 meters, and their trunk can have a diameter of up to 11 meters, making them very impressive. The leaves are compound and drop during periods of drought. The flowers are large, hanging on long stalks and are usually white. The fruits are large, woody, and contain a powdery pulp that is edible and rich in vitamin C. The seeds can retain their germination capabilities for up to 15 years.
Care
The Baobab prefers warm, sunny locations and cannot tolerate frost. They grow best in well-drained soil and have a low water requirement. Overwatering can cause the tree to rot and die. Young Baobabs need support to grow upright, as they have a weak stem in their early growth stage. Pruning is not necessary, as the tree naturally takes its own form.
