Origin
The Ilex crenata 'Glorie Gem', also known as the Japanese holly, originally comes from East Asia. This species primarily finds its origins in countries like Japan, Korea and China. The 'Glorie Gem' belongs to the Aquifoliaceae family and has been cultivated for years for decorative use in both garden and landscape architecture.
Characteristics
The 'Glorie Gem' is characterised by its small, glossy, dark green leaves which bear a strong resemblance to those of boxwood. It's a compact-growing shrub that reaches a maximum height of 50 centimetres. The plant is hardy and stays green all year long. In the spring, the Ilex crenata 'Glorie Gem' carries small white flowers that later turn into black berries.
Care
The plant requires little care. It grows best in well-drained, light to semi-shady conditions. The Ilex crenata 'Glorie Gem' doesn't need much water, but it's crucial to keep the ground slightly moist, especially during prolonged drought periods. Pruning can take place twice a year, in spring and autumn, to maintain the compact shape.
