Origin
The Laurus nobilis, also known as the bay, is a plant species originally from the Mediterranean region. The plant was already highly valued in ancient times for its medicinal and culinary properties. Throughout Greek and Roman times, laurel was also used to crown winners of competitions and philosophers.

Characteristics
The Laurus nobilis is an evergreen shrub or tree that can grow up to 10-18 metres high. The plant has glossy, dark green leaves that are oval and up to 9 cm long. The flowers of the Laurus nobilis are small, cream-coloured and are followed by small, black or purple-ish berries. Additionally, the plant is known for its aromatic leaves, which are often used in cooking.

Care
For the care of the Laurus nobilis, a well-draining soil and a location in full sun or semi-shade are most suitable. The plant requires considerable amounts of water and therefore needs to be watered regularly, especially in dry times. The laurel needs to be pruned regularly to maintain the desired shape, and needs protection from strong wind as the branches are quite brittle. The Laurus nobilis is fairly hardy in winter, but the plant needs protection in extremely cold temperatures.
