Origin
The Mahonia media 'Charity', also known as Mahonia shrub, is a plant species that originates from the northwest of the United States. It is a hybrid species that goes back to the Mahonia japonica and the Mahonia lomariifolia, two plant species that were further developed and adapted by a British nursery in 1962.
Characteristics
The Mahonia media 'Charity' is known for its large, striking, leather-like leaves which have a rich, variegated green colour. It blooms from November to March with long clusters of yellow flowers that resemble candles. The shrub can reach a height of about 4 meters and spreads widely. In the summer, the brightly coloured flowers can give way to dark blue, almost black berries.
Care
The Mahonia media 'Charity' is a strong, winter-hardy shrub that requires little maintenance. It prefers a place in semi-shade or full shade, but can also grow in full sun provided that the soil is kept sufficiently moist. The shrub has a preference for well-draining, rich soil. Pruning of the shrub isn't necessarily needed, but can take place in the spring to control size and shape.
