Origin
The Olea europaea, also known as the European olive tree, is a long-lived tree which originates from the Mediterranean region of Southern Europe and the Middle East. This species has played a central role in human culture and economy for millennia and has been disseminated worldwide since ancient times.

Characteristics
The Olea europaea is characterised by its grey-green, lance-shaped leaves and the rough, knobby bark. The tree can reach a height of 10 to 20 metres over the years and produces small white flowers which are followed by green to black fruits, or olives. The Olea europaea can grow to an extraordinary age; a few of them are known to be more than 1,000 years old.

Care
The Olea europaea prefers a sunny location and well-draining soil to prevent root rot. Although the tree is fairly drought-tolerant, regular watering during dry periods will promote growth and fruit production. It is recommended to prune the tree annually in early spring to maintain its shape and to improve light penetration through the crown.
