Origin
The Phyllostachys nigra, better known as black bamboo, hails from China. From there, it has spread across the world. Today, it is used in gardens for decorative purposes but also has a long history of utilisation in the furniture industry in East Asia.
Characteristics
The Phyllostachys nigra is characterised by its distinctive black stems that provide a striking contrast in a garden. The plant can reach a height of 4 to 8 meters, and the black colouring of the stems develops over a period of one to three years. The leaves of the plant are light green and can attain a length of 15 cm. The Phyllostachys nigra is a fast-growing species that is well able to withstand the cold.
Care
Caring for the Phyllostachys nigra requires some attention. Ideally, the plant should be situated in a spot with full sun, but it can also thrive in partial shade. Preferably, the plant should be placed in moist, well-draining soil. Despite its robustness, the plant benefits from a protective mulch layer in the winter to protect against frost. It is recommended to remove old and thin stems annually to promote the growth and appearance of the plant.
