Origin
The Phormium tenax 'Pink Stripe' originates from New Zealand. The plant belongs to the Hemerocallidaceae family and is also locally known as New Zealand flax. The indigenous people of New Zealand, the Maori, used the plant's fibres for textile production.

Characteristics
The Phormium tenax 'Pink Stripe' is a striking, evergreen perennial plant that is known for its long, sword-like leaves. The leaves are dark green in colour with a broad, pink stripe in the middle, giving this variety a distinctive appearance. The plant reaches a height of 140 to 160 centimetres and blooms in the summer period, with long, upright stems on which scarlet red flowers appear.

Care
Caring for the Phormium tenax 'Pink Stripe' requires a well-draining soil and a sunny to semi-shade position. Although the plant is quite hardy, it might need protection during severe frost. The plant has minimal requirements for the soil type, but prefers a slightly acidic soil. It can withstand drought, so frequent watering is not necessary. Old, dead leaves can simply be removed and the plant can be lightly pruned in the spring.
