Origin
The Phormium tenax 'Variegatum', also known as the New Zealand flax, has its roots in New Zealand, in particular the coastal regions. However, this plant has also proven to thrive well in various other climates, including that of Western Europe.
Characteristics
The Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' is an evergreen ornamental plant. The long, vertically growing leaves with their cream-white stripes are characteristic of this plant. The leaves can grow up to two metres high. In the summer, high flower stems with red flowers can emerge, which can be an impressive sight. In colder weather, the leaves often take on a red or purple hue.
Care
The care of the Phormium tenax 'Variegatum' does not require much work. The plant needs well-drained soil and a sunny to semi-shady location. During the growth period, from April to September, the use of special fertiliser for pot plants can stimulate growth. Despite its frost resistance, protection may be necessary in severe frost to prevent damage to the plant.
