Origin
The Pittosporum tobira 'Nana' originates from East Asia and is primarily found in countries such as Japan, China, and Korea. This decorative plant, also known as Japanese Mock Orange, is part of the Pittosporaceae family. With human intervention, it has spread globally and is now a popular choice for garden and landscape architects.
Characteristics
The Pittosporum tobira 'Nana' is a compact evergreen shrub that generally grows between 55-65 centimetres in height. This plant is distinguished by its shiny, medium-sized, green leaves which emit a strong, pleasant odour. In late spring and early summer, the plant varies in colour from white to yellow, producing small, spherical flowers. The flowers emit a potent fragrance similar to that of orange blossom.
Care
For optimal growth and bloom, the Pittosporum tobira 'Nana' needs well-drained soil and a sunny or semi-shaded location. Although it is resistant to drought, it is recommended to water regularly during dry periods. Pruning after flowering can help keep the shrub compact and tidy. It is resistant to low temperatures, but it's recommended to protect the plant during severe frost. The plant does not have specific nutritional needs and can be fed with a general fertiliser.
