Origin
The Trachycarpus wagnerianus, also known as Trachycarpus 'Wagnerianus', originates from the mountainous region of the Himalayas and the northern part of Myanmar. The plant has adapted to the harsh climate at high altitudes, which makes it highly frost-resistant. Originally, this palm was spread to other parts of the world due to its compact shape and its attractive leaves.
Characteristics
The Trachycarpus wagnerianus can be recognised by its compact, fan-shaped leaves, which unlike many other palms, do not spread out but hang downwards. The plant has a sturdy trunk that is covered with a rough fibrous texture. This hardy palm can reach heights of 10 to 12 metres and is therefore suitable for both gardens and indoor spaces. In spring, the palm produces small yellow flowers that turn into small black fruits after pollination.
Care
Despite its origin, the Trachycarpus Wagnerianus requires little specific care. The plant is frost-hardy and can grow in both full sun and half shade, but cannot tolerate overly wet soil. During the growing season, from April to September, it could be beneficial to water the plant regularly and fertilise it once a month. Older leaves that turn brown should be cut off to stimulate new growth.
