The plant is part of the Marantaceae family, known for their diverse species and variations. This plant family is named after Bartolomeo Maranta, an Italian doctor and botanist.

Characteristics
The Calathea 'Freddie' has several distinctive characteristics. The plant is characterized by its small and dense leaves, which are dark green on the top and purple on the underside. In addition, the 'Freddie' has a striking leaf pattern; light, wavy lines that run across the leaves. The plant can reach a maximum height of 60 centimetres. Unique to the 'Freddie' is the fact that it closes its leaves during the night and opens them in daylight.

Care
The care of the Calathea 'Freddie' requires some attention due to its tropical origin. The plant has a high humidity requirement, which should be replicated in the home environment. Along with this, the 'Freddie' tolerates a light location, but it cannot bear direct sunlight. The plant needs water regularly, but the soil should never be soaked.
