Origin
The Vriesea 'Astrid' is part of the bromeliad family that is predominantly found in Central and South America in the wild. This unique plant species has its origin in the tropical rainforests, where the humid and warm climate contributes to its growth and bloom. The Vriesea species are named after the Dutch botanist Willem Hendrik de Vriese.
Characteristics
The Vriesea 'Astrid' is an ornamental plant most noted for its large, striking bracts. The plant does not have conventional flowers, but rather what catches the eye are the bright, colourful inflorescences that grow from the rosette. These inflorescences, often in shades of red or yellow, can remain in good condition for months. The leaves of the Vriesea 'Astrid' are broad and form a rosette, which in their natural habitat capture water.
Care
For the optimal care of the Vriesea 'Astrid', it is important to place the plant in a bright spot without direct sunlight. The plant thrives best at a constant temperature between 18 and 24 degrees Celsius. Watering should be balanced, where the soil must always stay slightly moist without the roots standing in stagnant water. Furthermore, the Vriesea 'Astrid' needs high humidity to flourish, hence, regular spraying with water is recommended.
