Origin
The Kalanchoe thyrsiflora Red Lips, also known as the Flaming Katy, is a succulent native to South Africa. It grows in the dry, rocky regions of the Karoo. This species is part of the Crassulaceae family and was first described by the British botanist John Gilbert Baker in 1882.
Characteristics
This succulent has a rounded, bushy growth form with a striking red border around the leaves, hence the name 'Red Lips'. The leaves are broad and plump, with a surface that is covered with a white, waxy substance. This species generally flowers in the spring and develops bloom stalks with bright yellow flowers that have a distinctive smell.
Care
Kalanchoe thyrsiflora Red Lips prefers a sunny to semi-shaded position and well-draining soil. Although this plant is drought-tolerant, it needs regular watering and must dry out between watering. It is also resistant to light frost, but protection against severe frost is recommended. This plant can be grown both indoors and outdoors and is excellent for landscape planting or as a pot plant.
