Origin
The Kalanchoe beharensis, also known as the Elephant's Ear, is a species of succulent plant from the Crassulaceae family. The plant has its origin in the south of Madagascar. Due to its exotic appearance, it is popular as a houseplant in many parts of the world.
Characteristics
The Kalanchoe beharensis is characterised by its thick, fleshy leaves that have a felt-like appearance due to fine hairs. This gives the plant its unique, velvety texture. Each leaf grows to about 20 centimetres long. The plant produces small, bell-shaped flowers at the top of the stems.
Care
The care of the Kalanchoe beharensis is relatively simple. This plant prefers bright, indirect light and mild temperatures between 16 and 24 degrees Celsius. During the growing period, from spring to autumn, the plant requires regular water, but it is important to prevent the soil from becoming waterlogged. In the winter months, the plant requires less water. It is advisable to feed the plant with a dilution of a general fertiliser once per month during the growing season. Repotting may be necessary if the plant outgrows its current pot.
