Araucaria heterophylla
F00001686
Origin
The Austrocylindropuntia subulata, also known as the Eve's needle cactus, has its origin in the highlands of Peru. This plant has adapted to the harsh and dry conditions of its native land. Wild specimens of this species are often found on hills and mountains, where they can withstand strong winds, low temperatures and minimal rainfall.
Characteristics
The Austrocylindropuntia subulata is an upright, versatile cactus that grows into a large shrub of 1 to 4 metres high. The stems consist of cylindrical, sharp segments covered with long, firm subulate spikes. It develops bell-shaped, red flowers in the late spring and early summer. The fruits of this cactus open to reveal small, dark-coloured seeds.
Care
Taking care of the Austrocylindropuntia subulata is relatively simple. They need a sunny spot and well-drained soil to guarantee healthy growth. Watering should be moderate, only watering when the potting soil has completely dried out. Although the cactus can tolerate some cold, they should be moved indoors or protected during frost periods. Cultivation can happen by cutting stem segments.
